Yaletown has been a vital part of Vancouver since it’s birth over a hundred years ago. The Canadian Pacific Railway set up shop in Yaletown, bringing business and opportunity to this once empty forest area in Vancouver. It thrived in its warehouse days, then became deserted with the advent of the truck and trailers. Industry favoured the access of the highway, and preferred shipment with trucks. Expo 86 then sparkeda whole new era for Vancouver. It showed the world that Vancouver and Especially Yaletown was one of the best places to live in the world. It offered comfortable living encompassed between the great outdoors. Concord Pacific’s Li Ka Shing, a world known Asian developer and business man purchased the former expo lands. There was an immense amount of work put into developing the site. Concord Pacific worked closely with the City of Vancouver to master plan the area to make it as nature friendly and liveable as possible. The public was greatly considered a part of this planning. They were included in discussion and debate surrounding the parks, zoning, recreation, planning and other issues affecting the public.

 I thought you might be interested to see this graph put out by the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, showing the average prices from January 1977 to August 2006. Comparing these empasizes the changes that have gone on in this city over the years. In 1977 Coal Harbour hadn’t even been developed yet, and is now Vancouver’s prime luxury waterfront neighbourhood.

There are some great views of the Harbour as seen from some of the Vancouver Webcams.

The first is the Port of Vancouver’s site, which features the Harbour view as first in its list of webcams. Looking west, this view includes Granville.

Next is the ongoing expansion of the Convention Centre. This complex webcam shows the expansion of the site out over the water, as well as many user-selected views. And don’t forget the zoom capability. See it here - that shows the 360 pan view. What I like about this realtime webcam is its revelation of the exquisite setting in which this construction is taking place, and the urban way of life which it reveals. This setting is Coal Harbout, and it reveals a new Vancouver, excitingly placed between the natural beauty of Stanley Park, the mountains and ocean and the busy intensity of the downtown urban centre.

Going west toward Stanley Park from the Marine Building, the Vancouver Sculpture Biennale had several installations in the Coal Harbour area, making the walk along the recreational paths a stimulating experience, particularly if you took advantage of the cellphone guide to the pieces shown.

The whole event is completed at the end of this month, and while it was here, it added a great deal to the mix in open spaces of the Coal Harbour neighbourhood.
